Sif was contracted to manufacture the monopile foundations for the Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm (Blauwwind consortium) in the Dutch North Sea, approximately 22 km offshore Zeeland. The award covered production of 77 TP-less monopiles (i.e., monopile foundations designed for direct turbine installation without transition pieces), matching the project’s 77-turbine configuration. According to Sif’s project and investor communications, the contract was awarded by Van Oord in its capacity as the project’s EPCI contractor / BoP contractor. Sif’s manufacturing scope comprised fabrication of the monopile primary steel and included accompanying secondary steel elements associated with the monopile foundations. Sif reported the total steel tonnage for the package at approximately 68 kilotonnes. The production programme was scheduled to run from early July through December 2018, subject to financial close, with installation offshore subsequently completed during the 2020 construction season. These foundations supported the installation of the project’s V164-9.5 MW class turbines and formed a key enabling work package for the overall 731.5 MW development. The contract reinforced Sif’s position as a major Dutch fabricator for large-diameter monopiles in North Sea offshore wind projects.
