Borssele Beta contract: installation of two 67-km 220 kV export cables for Borssele offshore wind farms 3 and 4; plus a 7-km interconnector between Alpha and Beta substations.
VBMS, a subsidiary of Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., was awarded the Borssele Beta export cabling contract by TenneT for the grid connection serving the Borssele offshore wind farms 3 and 4 in the Dutch North Sea. The scope covered the installation of two 220 kV export cables, each approximately 67 km long, routed via the Western Scheldt estuary and coming ashore near the existing high‑voltage substation at Borssele. In addition, VBMS was responsible for installing a seven‑kilometre interconnector cable between the Borssele Alpha and Borssele Beta offshore substations. To enable safe installation and reduce operational maintenance risk, the works included significant seabed preparation in shallow and environmentally sensitive sections of the route. VBMS planned pre‑sweeping and dredging activities to prepare the cable corridor and to support installation at the required burial depth. The overall execution combined nearshore and offshore methods, including route preparation, dredging/earthworks and cable protection measures as required along the alignment. The contract announcement reported Boskalis’ share of the project value at approximately EUR 70 million. The Borssele Beta connection was scheduled to follow Borssele Alpha into service as part of TenneT’s standardized 700 MW offshore grid programme.
