On 17 March 2025, Ørsted and Norwegian AI software company Spoor launched an AI bird-monitoring pilot at the 752 MW Borssele 1 & 2 offshore wind farm, co-owned by Ørsted and Norges Bank Investment Management. Three high-resolution cameras have been installed at two of the project's 94 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines and perform continuous daytime monitoring of avian behaviour at long distances claimed to materially exceed conventional radar-based detection in offshore environments. Spoor's AI software identifies and tracks individual birds using off-the-shelf camera hardware, an architecture intended to lower system cost relative to dedicated radar installations. Data collection at Borssele is planned to continue for at least one year to capture seasonal variations in bird activity, with the resulting dataset intended to inform avoidance-behaviour and collision-risk understanding and to feed into conservation measures across Ørsted's offshore portfolio. The pilot extends an existing relationship: Ørsted previously invested in Spoor in June 2022 as part of a technology-development partnership focused on improving birdlife data from offshore wind farms.
