On 9 April 2017, fabrication of the Borssele Alpha offshore transformer platform, which will collect and transform power from the Borssele 1 & 2 wind farms, reached a key manufacturing milestone with a steel-cutting ceremony at the HSM shipyard in Schiedam, the Netherlands. TenneT, responsible for the offshore grid connection, had engaged HSM Offshore to construct the Borssele Alpha platform. The ceremony marked the formal start of cutting steel for the platform structure at the yard, initiating its physical construction. Once completed, the Alpha platform will collect 66kV power from the Borssele 1 and 2 turbines, step it up to 220kV, and transmit it via export cables to the onshore substation for integration into the Dutch extra-high-voltage grid.
