On 4 September 2025, Energinet and 50Hertz signed a cluster of implementation-stage commitments for Bornholm Energy Island at an informal meeting of EU energy ministers in Copenhagen: (i) the European Commission and Energinet signed the €645.2 million Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy) grant agreement covering the two Danish converter stations and the Bornholm–Zealand HVDC link; (ii) Energinet and 50Hertz placed a joint order with Siemens Energy (above €1 billion) for four HVDC converter stations and one HVAC high-voltage substation; (iii) Energinet contracted NKT (~€650 million) for the 525 kV HVDC submarine and onshore cable system between Bornholm and Zealand. These commitments mark the move from development into implementation; the Siemens contract is explicitly conditional on a future Final Investment Decision (per the 22 November 2024 TED notice), and the underlying FID remains projected around 2027 ahead of main construction in Denmark.
