By the end of June 2024, BESSAC had completed the first microtunnel at the Le Porge landfall in Gironde for the Bay of Biscay HVDC interconnection. The shore-crossing microtunnel runs approximately 1,300 metres from the former Cantine Nord beach car-park, under the dune and out to the ocean, providing the conduit through which the future submarine HVDC cables and fibre-optic cables will be pulled in spring 2026 from sea to land. The microtunnel was bored by a microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) operated by BESSAC as general contractor for Prysmian Powerlink under its EPCI scope. This first French landfall microtunnel completion was followed by the construction of the landfall chamber and installation of the conduits inside the microtunnel, leaving the structure ready for cable pulling.
