On 15 March 2006, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg issued the SeeAnlV Genehmigung to AWE Arkona-Windpark-Entwicklungs-GmbH for the construction and operation of 80 wind turbines (plus internal cabling and offshore substation) at the Arkona (officially "Arkona-Becken Südost") offshore wind farm in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (AWZ) of the Baltic Sea, approximately 35 km northeast of Rügen on a 37 km² project area in water depths of 23-37 m. The application had been filed on 12 May 2000. BSH later amended Nebenbestimmung Nr. 23 on 5 April 2017 setting a 31 July 2017 latest-construction-start deadline to keep the consent alive. E.ON took the final investment decision in April 2016 (project partner Equinor, then Statoil), with construction beginning in August 2017. The as-built project comprises 60 Siemens Gamesa SWT-6.0-154 power-boosted turbines (6.4 MW each, 385 MW total) on monopile foundations, with first power in September 2018 and official inauguration by Chancellor Angela Merkel on 16 April 2019.
