On 9 June 2004, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issued the SeeAnlV Genehmigungsbescheid (Aktenzeichen 8086.01/Amrumbank West/Z12) to Amrumbank West GmbH for the construction and operation of the Amrumbank West offshore wind farm in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (AWZ) of the North Sea, approximately 35 km northwest of Helgoland in water depths of 20-25 m. The approval covered 80 wind turbines on a 32 km² project area. The application had been filed on 16 June 2000. Amrumbank West GmbH was originally an E.ON subsidiary; the operating company was renamed Amrum-Offshore West GmbH in 2015 and transferred to RWE Renewables in late 2019. The as-built project comprises 80 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines (3.78 MW each, 288 MW total) on monopile foundations. First power was exported in April 2015 and the wind farm entered full commercial operation in October 2015.
