On 17 August 2011, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issued the original SeeAnlV Genehmigung to Northern Energy OWP Albatros GmbH for the construction and operation of the offshore wind farm Albatros in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (AWZ) of the North Sea, approximately 105 km north of Borkum. The approval covered 79 wind energy installations of the 5-7 MW class, with planned hub heights between 90 and 94 m and rotor diameters of more than 120 m, including ten turbines on gravity-base foundations as a planned test field. The application had been filed on 6 November 2007. The project subsequently transferred to a STRABAG/Northern Energy holding company in 2011/2012, then to EnBW in December 2014; under EnBW the layout was reduced to 16 Siemens SWT-7.0-154 turbines (112 MW) on monopiles, requiring a 2016 Plangenehmigung amendment under SeeAnlV. The wind farm entered commercial operation in January 2020.
